From Teacher to Facilitator – Morning

Have you ever just stood back and just watched your students learn? Did they miss you while you just watched and listened? Have you ever wondered what would happen if you removed the expertise (the teacher) and became more of a ‘Creator of Curiosity’ and just a ‘Guide on the Side’?

For hundreds of years, the teacher has stood at the front of the classroom and has ‘taught’ or talked to the class. This has been accompanied by a blackboard, an overhead projector, a Smart-board or a television. But have you ever considered the question, ‘What are the children learning while you’re teaching?’

This practical session will challenge your thinking and provoke real discussion about the role of ‘the teacher’ in schools in what is already the backend of the second decade of the 21st Century. You will have the opportunity to see real-life examples in classrooms and to explore the how, when and where this transformation will take place in your own classroom or school.

An Introduction to SOLE – Afternoon

Self-Organised Learning Environments (SOLEs) are created when educators encourage students to work as a community to answer their own vibrant questions using the Internet. They are the invention of Professor Sugata Mitra, winner of the $1m TED Prize in 2013.

Anyone can create a SOLE — spark curiosity in children by asking them to explore a Big Question using the Internet and their ability to work together. Learning happens spontaneously in these purposefully chaotic environments.

During this session you will learn how to create the optimum conditions for a SOLE to operate and how to plan for a successful SOLE session. You will get the opportunity of observing a SOLE session in action as well as watching a video of Sugata Mitra himself conducting a SOLE session at Hartsholme Academy. We will also leave you with all of the resources you could possibly need to design and facilitate your own SOLE session the very next day!
